How to boost Self-esteem

Share

Self-esteem is a crucial aspect of our well-being and overall happiness. It influences how we perceive ourselves, handle challenges, and interact with others. Developing a healthy level of self-esteem is essentially for personal growth and success. Low self-esteem can have a significant impact on girls’ lives, affecting various aspects of their well-being, relationships, and personal development. Girls with low self-esteem often experience negative emotions such as sadness and anxiousness, constantly feel unworthy, feel like they do not meet the beauty standards of society, doubt their abilities, feel incapable of achieving success, struggle to maintain healthy relationships, develop trust issues, fear rejection and isolate from people. If you find yourself struggling with low self-esteem, then worry not. Below is a list of practical tips and strategies to boost your self-esteem and embrace your inner strength.

Practice Self-Compassion
Self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, just as you would treat a close friend. Instead of harsh self-criticism, practice self-compassion by acknowledging your flaws, mistakes, and imperfections with empathy. Treat yourself with the same love and understanding you would do to others, and remind yourself that mistakes are an essential part of the learning process.

Challenge negative self-talk
Negative self-talk can significantly impact self-esteem. Become aware of your inner dialogue and identify any negative thoughts or beliefs about yourself; these can include, “I’m not as smart as other girls in my class”, “I’m not as fair enough to be considered beautiful”, ”I’ll never live up to society’s expectations”, “I’m not thin enough/I’m not skinny enough”, “I can’t pursue my dreams because of cultural expectations”, “I’m not successful enough”, and so on. Challenge these thoughts by questioning their validity and replacing them with more positive and realistic statements. For instance, if you catch yourself thinking “I’m not as beautiful”, replace it with “my worth is not defined by my appearance; my true beauty lies in my character and actions” or if you think “I’m not successful enough/I’m not smart”, replace it with “success is subjective, and I define my own version or success based on my values, goals, strengths and abilities.”

Celebrate your achievements
Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Take pride in your efforts and give yourself credit for your hard work. Keeping a journal of your achievements can serve as a reminder of your capabilities and boost your self-esteem when you need a confidence boost.

Surround yourself with positive influences
The people we surround ourselves with can greatly impact our self-esteem. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and support you. Seek out relationships that encourage personal growth, provide constructive feedback, and celebrate your successes, thereby limiting your exposure to negative influences or individuals who constantly bring you down.

Practice Self-Care
Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being is vital for building self-esteem. Prioritize self-care activities that nourish the body and mind; engage in regular exercise, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. When you prioritize your well-being, you send a powerful message to yourself that you are deserving of love and care.

Recognise and embrace your unique qualities and strengths. By focusing on your positive attributes and talents, you avoid comparing yourself to others. Understand that everyone has their own journey, and your worth is not determined by external factors or societal standards. By practicing self-compassion, self-care, and challenging negative talk, you can gradually build a strong foundation of self-esteem and enhancing the qualities that sets you apart as you use your strengths to pursue your passions and goals.
